Joe "Adonis" Doto avoided a prison sentence and deportation by exiling himself to Italy.

Adonis had improperly claimed U.S. citizenship when reentering the U.S. after a late 1940s trip to Havana, and he had other legal problems. He was facing federal and state perjury charges and owed back taxes to the IRS.
He sailed out of New York harbor aboard the ocean liner S.S. Conte Biancamano and spent the rest of his life - almost 16 years - in Italy.
