On this date (Jan. 24) in 1925, gunmen seriously wounded Chicago rackets boss John Torrio outside of his Clyde Avenue home. Torrio, who was to begin a federal sentence for Prohibition violations just days later, spent weeks recovering. He then spent months in a Lake County jail. Upon his release, he and Al Capone and their wives vacationed in Havana. When they returned, Torrio entered semi-retirement in New York, while Capone entered underworld history as leader of the Chicago Outfit.
